[The only thing more legendary than Liquid's ego or his reputation was his paranoia. It had only gotten worse since the FOXHOUND betrayal at Shadow Moses. Since that--or perhaps because of it--he had developed a near sixth sense for trouble brewing.]

[The operative in the SEAL uniform didn't know exactly what was going on, but all was not well in this insane little building.]

[...and somehow, he actually found that rather exciting. He was a bit lost without something to do for Philanthropy, after all. Regardless, if something was going to happen they would need to be prepared.]

[Liquid was sitting in the library, flipping idly through a copy of Titus Andronicus.The soldier debated over whether to call Otacon now or wait until he could have some evidence with these suspicions. Acting on vague impulse had gotten him into trouble far too many times in the past.]

[and suddenly, it's like nothing ever changed. It's a mission. Liquid and him.]

[Otacon leans forward.]

What sort of thing? You mean you think there's going to be some sort of war here?

[Now that was a sensation Liquid had missed--having someone to work with, someone he could trust to watch his back.]

It's difficult to say exactly. All I'm going on is intuition...but if I were to venture a guess, I would assume such a thing.

I don't know who, why, how, or when...but something's going to happen.

Then we have to get ready. George Washington said, "To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace." He meant how whenever you're really ready for something, it ends up not happening. So, if you're ready for the right thing, you can kind of rule it out.

We should fortify a base.

[Liquid resisted the urge to slap Otacon upside the head, somehow managing to keep a serious expression.]

Where do you suggest? I'm certain we can find a suitable room--I hear there's even one that reconstructs Shadow Moses perfectly. Surely there's one we can use.

And we'll need a plan as well. [He smirked just slightly.] As always, I am a weapon for Philanthropy's purposes.

Yeah, there's gotta be! A really good defensible position, with enough room to take in people who need a place to go, if something bad does break out.

Liquid. [He can't help but smile back.] You're a founding member, y'know.

I'll start looking tonight and see what I can find. The older version of Emma's offered to assist with tech support as well.

I quite pride myself on that quality, Hal. [Smiles sincerely--something only his Otacon would ever see.]

Yeah she's - something special. Really bright.

Yeah. [Liquid has a nice smile.] Terrible in the best way.

If this one's going to be helping us, then you'll get a chance to speak to her.

Of course. [He paused for a moment, thoughtful] ...I'm glad you're still willing to work with me, Hal.

Oh. yeah. That's good. [totally not really nervous about that. Yep.]

[Smiles slightly] ...good.

Listen, Hal...there were a couple less pressing matters I wanted to discuss with you.

Your sister and I were stuck in a room not long ago with these unusual mirrors. They kept showing the strangest things, though we could never quite place why those particular images.

[He took a breath and sighed, looking worn out somehow.]

One of them...I saw myself, standing on top of REX and surrounded by a burning Shadow Moses. Laughing--laughing, for god's sake. I'm nothing like Snake, I...I can't be.

[Hal puts his hand on his shoulder.]

That's not you. I know it isn't.

If those version in other worlds did that, what it means is that you're special. You had that choice, and you didn't take it.

[Sighing heavily, he put a hand to his forehead]

...I'm not like them. Yet everyone here seems to immediately assume I'm a megalomaniac on sight. I'm not sure how much more of this utter insanity I can take.

They just have to get to know you.

[A smile crept across his face at that, though he took issue with one thing.]
