[The only thing more legendary than Liquid's ego or his reputation was his paranoia. It had only gotten worse since the FOXHOUND betrayal at Shadow Moses. Since that--or perhaps because of it--he had developed a near sixth sense for trouble brewing.]

[The operative in the SEAL uniform didn't know exactly what was going on, but all was not well in this insane little building.]

[...and somehow, he actually found that rather exciting. He was a bit lost without something to do for Philanthropy, after all. Regardless, if something was going to happen they would need to be prepared.]

[Liquid was sitting in the library, flipping idly through a copy of Titus Andronicus.The soldier debated over whether to call Otacon now or wait until he could have some evidence with these suspicions. Acting on vague impulse had gotten him into trouble far too many times in the past.]

Listen, Hal...there were a couple less pressing matters I wanted to discuss with you.

Your sister and I were stuck in a room not long ago with these unusual mirrors. They kept showing the strangest things, though we could never quite place why those particular images.

[He took a breath and sighed, looking worn out somehow.]

One of them...I saw myself, standing on top of REX and surrounded by a burning Shadow Moses. Laughing--laughing, for god's sake. I'm nothing like Snake, I...I can't be.

[Hal puts his hand on his shoulder.]

That's not you. I know it isn't.

If those version in other worlds did that, what it means is that you're special. You had that choice, and you didn't take it.

[Sighing heavily, he put a hand to his forehead]

...I'm not like them. Yet everyone here seems to immediately assume I'm a megalomaniac on sight. I'm not sure how much more of this utter insanity I can take.

They just have to get to know you.

[A smile crept across his face at that, though he took issue with one thing.]

[Hal sits closer to him, so he can lean his head on his shoulder.]

...tch. [He wrapped one arm around Otacon's shoulders tightly]

I'm not yet sure...but I may have found a solution to our problem with my lifespan.

[Hal leans against his warm body, then his eyes fly open with excitement.]

You did?! [Happiness washes over his face.] James, that's great news! See, I told you you couldn't give up!

What did you find?

[Liquid wasn't sure if it was something to be so excited over, not just yet. After all, he'd seen Gray Fox's condition...but if Raiden did such a thing in the future, advancements must've been made somehow.]

Another Otacon gave me the idea. A few years in the future, there'll be some serious progress made in the field of cybernetics...perhaps that could help.

You mean turning into a cyborg?

[As strange and scary as that idea is, Hal can't deny it's KIND OF AWESOME.]

Something to that effect. I wouldn't dare go as far as Fox did, but...according to this other Otacon, recreating a human body could be possible.

A prosthetic body, like in Ghost in the Shell? I never thought that kind of technology could exist in the real world, but what happened to poor Grey Fox proves it...and also proves how horribly it can go wrong.

[He shivers and scoots closer to Liquid's warm, firm, human body.] I wouldn't be able to stand it if anything like that happened to you.

...According to that other Otacon and your sister, Raiden does something similar. I can only assume he kept far more control than Fox.

[Liquid pulled him close, hugging him tightly] I know, Hal...I won't allow such a thing to happen.
