[DATING SIM] A chance to destroy a nice, romantic atmosphere
[Look, a chance to see that rare creature--a somewhat content (Love Interest) Mantis! He's found himself a massive outdoor concert hall, an orchestra warming up on stage. Out on the lawn seats, with a blanket and a special someone and the stars twinkling in the sky, it could be really quite romantic.
Mantis is sitting in an uncomfortable plastic chair under the canopy, muttering about acoustics.
And the program starts. Go be romantic with someone who is not Mantis, for the love of Christ (obvious exception aside).]

[Liquid sighs contentedly, enjoying the cool air, the music, and the peace.]
It's good to be free.

I don't know if I'd call him that, but... you can't account for taste. I mean, a million people, a million opinions, right?
At least I think that's how it goes...
[settles back on the ground a bit, listening]
[softly] I'd imagine it is, yeah.
no subject
[Liquid rolls his head to the side to look at him.]
You would know. You've been held hostage before.
no subject
[pushes his glasses up to hide said smirk] I don't think that's always the case..
..Hm.
[falls backwards and lays down on the ground, looking up at the stars]
Yeah, I guess you're right.
It's funny, actually- I had forgotten all about that, if you can believe that.
no subject
[Liquid's eyebrows rise.]
You had?
no subject
[nods to the second bit]
Well, yeah. That's not exactly something to dwell over.
And besides. I'm happier now- I guess things happen for a reason. Not that I'm advocating being held hostage, but..
If I wasn't there, I wouldn't have met Dave. Or you. Or been swept into everything here.
I'm not complaining.
no subject
[laughs quietly]
You're really something else, Doctor.
no subject
What do you mean-?
[looks back up]
[softly] You don't need to call me Doctor, y'know. Otacon works better.
no subject
[looks over at him]
Right, that pet name brother uses.
no subject
I'd like to think there's something positive about that, anyway.
[doesn't notice the look, but he frowns slighty]
It's not a pet name- it's my codename. Y'know, how you use Liquid?
Besides, it's a very respectable convention.
And anyway, I never liked my real name.
no subject
What's wrong with Hal?
no subject
[starts laughing at that last bit] Yours isn't worse than mine.
Ever watch 2001: A Space Odyssey? My father- he loved that movie. During the latter part of it, there's a sentient computer that runs the entire spaceship- it's name is HAL. Eventually, it winds up killing one of the two astronauts on board, just to get 'killed' by another one.
[sighs] I hate that movie.
no subject
A mad machine. I can see why you wouldn't like it.
[He raises up on one elbow and looks at him.]
Is it worse than James Bond?
no subject
Mhm.
[looks up and over at him]
I'd think so. At least people can understand James Bond.
Besides-[pushes up his glasses]
-unless your real name is Octapussy, I think you're in good shape.
[smiles, a little]
no subject
[He falls back and laughs]
You make a good point.
[+10 for not making fun of his name.]
no subject
See? Things could be worse.
...
[Looks at him for a moment, silently]
no subject
[For the moment, it's like they're not trapped in an interdimensional physically impossible building run by his lunatic bastard father at all.]
[Liquid is curious about being stared at, though he doesn't really mind.]
What?
no subject
Wha-?
[Oh, boy. Was he staring? He was staring.]
Oh, uh. Nice night, huh?
no subject
Yeah.
[He has an uncharacteristicly serene expression.]
Peaceful.
no subject
[Quickly turns his head to look back up at the sky, just letting the music play.]
[After a moment, he closes one eye, and raises a hand in the air- looks like he's tracing something]
I can never see it.
no subject
[watches his hand]
See what?
no subject
[points to the stars]
The constellations. No matter how hard I look, I can never see the shapes they're supposed to be. I just see balls of gas.
no subject
They don't look anything like what they're named after. It's only something people project onto the top of the patterns. As if they aren't good enough of their own.
[He points]
That jagged line and the bright ones around it, that's Ursa Major. It's a sign to navigate by. Bears have nothing to do with it.
I suppose this sky has decided we're in the Northern Hemisphere.
no subject
[Scoots closer to him. Only to see where he's pointing at, of course.]
-Points to Polaris, right?
[looks over to him for confirmation- and didn't realize how close he was]
Ah-
no subject
Right.
[Why does it suddenly feel warmer? And why does he think, '+2'?]
[He looks up again quickly.]
-and that leads to Arcturus.
