Probably because they are hurt by the rejection of their father and compounded with the loss of Meryl among other things they aren't coping as well.

[He turns his head slightly to look at the heavy hand on his shoulder.]

Or because they haven't developed a thick enough skin yet.

[It pretty much depends on the time they are from or their current situation.]
